The Intensive Curses
Bologna (IT)
02 - 04 Feb 2018

Curated in collaboration with Chiara Vecchiarelli for Arte Fiera 2018, The Intensive Curses is a programme of works-hops led by artists.
While facilitating transmission of extraordinary knowledges, The Intensive Curses addresses the growing role of art galleries in the production of cultural value, as well as the liminal space where circulation of knowledge and creation of value collide. Informed by the artists’ own poetics and through various procedures and practical exercises, the works-hops include transactions of knowledge, skill and experience, allowing the artworks or practice of each artist to circulate through the bodies of the participants.

Sleeping Workshop led by a dog
Krõõt Juurak & Alex Bailey

Krõõt Juurak and Alex Bailey have devised a sleeping workshop, which will be taught by a dog. Usually we think of the training of pets as a one way transmission. However studies in auto-domestication have shown that the domestication is mutual. Pets are training owners to the same degree as owners are training pets. In this workshop we dedicate an hour to learn from a dog. A local dog with special skills in sleeping, will be introduced to the participants. And the participants will try to learn about sleeping from the dog. The workshop further questions the relation between humans and pets, and the relation between knowledge transmission and production at large.

Krõõt Juurak (Estonia) and Alex Bailey (UK) are artists and performers working and living in Vienna. They received there MFA from the Sandberg Institute of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Their recent performance collaborations include Animal Jokes (for Animals) performed at Secession, Vienna, Xing, Bologna and Bonnefanten Museum Maastricht, Animal Show performed at WUK Performing Arts, Vienna and since 2014 Performances for Pets which has been performed at various homes in Zürich, Amsterdam, Brussels, Erlangen, Vienna, Tallinn and Berlin.

Animal Companion and Telepathic Elegance
Hana Lee Erdman

This performance of companionship applies principles of interspecies relations through choreography and image making in order to expand a possible repertoire of human relations. The work proposes the exhibition space of Collegio Venturoli as a social art space, and a vital arena for designing and collecting strategies for being together. Diverse registers of visuality and sensibility generate a place of public intimacy and sensitivity proposing the practice of being together as a creative one.

Hana Lee Erdman is a dance artist living between Berlin and Stockholm. She makes dances with people like Louise Dahl, Allison Lorenzen, and Jassem Hindi, and she has worked in the productions of Mårten Spångberg, Keith Hennessy, Isabelle Schad, Sara Shelton Mann, and Marysia Stokloska. She has a Masters Degree from the Universität der Künste Berlin, (HZT).

Silver Academy
Pavel Sterec

Inspired by institutions such as the council of the elders, the status of "professor emeritus", and in general the imagery of the sage, the Silver Academy proposes a temporary university of senior citizen. Academies of the third age introduce the possibility of an antithesis to today’s mainstream utilitarian view on learning. Simultaneously a temporary installation, tableau, and social sculpture, the event stages a meeting of people who did not give up on education even if they are no longer in the productive age to share with a public motivations and reflections on "non-utilitary" studies and correlation between wisdom and age.

Pavel Sterec has studied at several studios at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague; currently he is a doctoral student at the Studio of Photography at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. His work is based on personal and social encounters and situations transformed into conceptual installations.

Political Therapy
Valentina Desideri

“Political Therapy” is a practice originally invented by Valentina Desideri, which she has spread to various public and private contexts over the past years, alongside with “Fake Therapy”. Both Political and Fake Therapy play with the therapeutic set-up and can be practiced and modified by anyone, anywhere. The roles of the therapist and patient are arbitrary and interchangeable, no cure is intended or guaranteed. On the contrary the therapies celebrate the capacity of problems to unfold thoughts and images through touch and conversation

Valentina Desideri was best defined by a friend who called her a 20 year old on tour. Although this was meant as a reproach she found this definition more suiting than performance artist or anything like that. Lately she has also been called a psychic, which, if added to the previous description, makes of her a psychic 20 year old on tour. She trained in contemporary dance at the Laban Centre in London, she did a MA in Fine Arts at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. She does Fake Therapy and Political Therapy, and is one of the co-organizers of Performing Arts Forum in France, she speculates in writing with Stefano Harney, she engages in Poethical Readings with Denise Ferreira da Silva, she is part of the Oficina de Imaginação Política, she reads and writes.
